What Does Honda HR-V Stand For?

2022 Honda HR-V

The 2022 Honda HR-V is a staple in the Honda model lineup, but its acronymized name remains a mystery to many buyers. So, what does Honda HR-V stand for? According to Honda, HR-V simply means “Hi-rider Revolutionary Vehicle.”

The model has also been sold as the Honda Vezel in Japan and China. This name is a play on the word bezel, which refers to the face of a cut gem—a fitting reference to the faceted, sculptural look of Honda vehicles.

First-Generation Honda HR-V

Like many Honda models, the HR-V debuted first in Japan, where the brand is based. What did the Honda HR-V mean for Japanese buyers in 1999? For one, the original HR-V shared a platform with the earlier Honda Logo. It also offered buyers a choice between five-door and three-door body styles and two configurations, originally dubbed GH2 and GH4. The five-door HR-V was longer overall and featured a longer wheelbase than the three-door version. Both, however, featured a MacPherson strut front suspension and a five-link De Dion-type rear suspension.

Prior to its release in Europe, the HR-V was enhanced with safety features designed to reduce pedestrian injuries, ABS brakes with EBD (electronic brakeforce distribution), and dual SRS (supplemental restraint system) airbags. It also got upgrades like power windows, folding rear seats, power steering, heat-absorbing glazing, air conditioning, and front fog lights.

Second-Generation Honda HR-V

After the Honda Element was discontinued, the HR-V was received to offer SUV buyers a model smaller than both the CR-V and the Pilot. The second-generation HR-V hit the U.S. market in 2015 as a 2016 model. This time, it shared a platform with the Honda Fit and was nearly identical to the Honda Vezel model that had been sold in Japan since 2013.

Wondering what Honda HR-V means for today’s buyers in Appleton and Manitowoc? The HR-V was refreshed for the 2019 model year with a redesigned chrome bar grille similar to that of the Honda Civic. It also got a new LED headlamp design, roof rails, and a new look for the bumper.
