Where can I get my car ready for winter in Green Bay, WI?
Is Your Vehicle Ready for Winter?
There are so many things to do to get ready for the fall and winter months: bring out the warm clothes and jackets, pull the seasonal stuff out of the garden, switch out the furnace filters, winterize your windows and doors, and, of course, winterizing your vehicle. But if you’re not mechanically inclined, doing anything other than putting gas in your tank or air in your tires can be intimidating.
Don’t worry! Here at Van’s Honda in Green Bay, WI, we can get your car ready for winter.
Winter Tires for Slippery Conditions
Even if you just got brand new tires, you might want to consider getting a pair of winter boots for your ride. Winter tires have thousands of little slits in the rubber, stopping the grooves from getting clogged with snow and ice like they would on a normal tire. These micro-grooves are what gives you that extra traction that you need in winter.
Have you had winter tires for a while? When was the last time you checked the tread on them? If you don’t know how to check, it’s simple. Take a penny and insert it into a main groove with Lincoln’s head facing down. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, then it’s time to change your tires.
We have a dedicated tire center right here at our dealership. We have the right tires for your vehicle. In addition, we offer a free 24-month Tire Road Hazard Protection program. For 2 years, we’ll reimburse up to $40 on any tire repairs, or, if one gets damaged so badly that you need a new tire, we’ll reimburse up to 100% of the original cost.
Cold Weather Oil
Changing from a thicker 10W-30 oil to a thinner 5W-30 oil helps your vehicle start more reliably in the winter. 5W-30 is less viscous than 10W-30, meaning your oil pressure stays where it needs to be when its cold.
Cold Weather Batteries
Most of us have gone out to start our cars in winter just to find them dead. It’s a terrible feeling. Connecting a battery to positive and negative terminals causes a chemical reaction that produces electrical current. As you might remember from chemistry class, most chemical reactions slow way down in colder temperatures. The battery’s age also slows reaction speeds. No reaction = no power = car not starting. Cold weather batteries have a measurement called Cold Cranking Amps (CCA), which is the number of amps delivered at freezing temperatures while maintaining at least 7.2 volts. Even with new batteries, though, it’s always good to have a set of jumper cables just in case.
Climate Control Repairs
Not having a working heater in your car during winter isn’t just uncomfortable, it can be dangerous. Not being able to properly defrost your windshield or windows greatly limits your visibility. Having an out-of-shape blower motor could be the reason that your car takes 30 minutes to start getting warm inside.
